Mystery Island was the lone live action segment on the animation/live action hybrid series, The Skatebirds. The Skatebirds was an updated version of the Banana Splits. Like its Banana Splits predecessor, Danger Island, Mystery Island dealt with people stranded on a remote island being chased by evil villain(s), in this case, Dr. Strange. Strange wanted the P.O.P.S., a robot, to use in his quest for world domination. To get P.O.P.S., Strange caused the plane carrying the robot to crash land on his island. The rest of the series dealt with Strange trying to capture the robot, while the crew of the plane (pilot Chuck Kelly and Sue and Sandy Corwin) tried to avoid Strange and get back home.

After the shows initial run, the Skatebirds were brought back in a half hour version on Sunday mornings, but the Mystery Island segments were not included.

The P.O.P.S. robot was actually a modified version of the Robot from the Lost in Space series.

Boomerang, the Cartoon Network's spin off station, has aired the Mystery Island segments as part of the Captain Caveman and the Teen Angels show from time to time.
